The .au domain: protect your business name
The .au namespace gives Australian businesses a shorter web address. Instead of ending in .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .gov.au or .edu.au, an address can end simply in .au, like yourbusiness.au.
What can you do with a .au address?
- It works just like your .com.au address. Customers could reach your site at yourbusiness.au or yourbusiness.com.au.
- You can set up an email alias so, for example, admin@yourbusiness.au and admin@yourbusiness.com.au both go to the same inbox.
Why do I want one?
Mainly to protect your brand and identity online. Opportunistic cybercriminals can register a .au version of your business name and use it to impersonate you in fraud and phishing emails. If you have yourbusiness.com.au, someone else could register yourbusiness.au.
Will everyone use .au as the standard? Honestly, we don't know. New domain types have been released in the past with lower take-up than expected. Whether or not it is widely used, our advice is to look at it as protection for your brand.
What do I need to do?
Ask us to check whether your .au name is still available. To register, a business needs its ABN and to show it holds the matching .com.au or .net.au, or otherwise has an Australian presence. We can also set up a redirect and an email alias for you. For more information see auDA's .au domain pages.
